What is one think you hate about sunscreens? I would say the sticky, greasy feeling it gives and sometimes white cast. I am quite sure these might be your reasons for not wearing sunscreen or at least hating the poor thing. But hey, you know right, sunscreen is an inevitable part of your beauty regime. Not only when you are outdoors, sunscreen is necessary even when you are indoors. Today I am going to express my thoughts about a sunscreen, a powdered sunscreen.
Why I was particularly intrigued about the powdered sunshine is because it came in powder form. I never knew there was a sunscreen in powder form. And then when I visited a Lush store in Dubai, I discovered it. Plus the kind people from Lush were kind enough to offer this one for free. The staff at Lush in Mercato mall invited me for a shop tour and this was one of the items I received. Please keep reading to know what I think about the powdered sunshine from Lush cosmetics.

My take on the Lush powdered sunshine
The packaging of the powdered sunshine is quite simple, a transparent plastic bottle with a black label where the product name and other details like ingredient list, method of using and product claims are mentioned. It has a flip-open cap. Not a fancy packaging, but you know right, Lush has no fancy looking packaging anyways. But the bottle is easy to carry and travel-friendly.
The powder is very very light pink in colour. It has a fragrance that is a mix of citrus and earthy aroma. I think the smell of patchouli is standing out as well. Patchouli has an earthy, herbal scent. A very soothing and refreshing fragrance. It leaves a very mild scent on your skin which lingers for some time and disappears after a while.
When you take the powder in your hand, you can feel the powder to be a bit coarse and grainy. When you apply the powdered sunshine on your skin make sure you dab and not rub. You can use a powder brush and just dust some powder on your face. Once applied on the skin you can hardly feel its on. What I wasn’t sure before trying this powdered sunscreen was that if it will look powdery or not and I must say even when I apply quite a thick layer of the sunscreen, it didn’t look powdery at all. Undetectable even on my tanned skin. It doesn’t feel greasy and really mattifies my skin and no white cast.
What I really have a problem with the powdered sunshine is regarding the SPF. SPF 15 is too low especially when I am outside in the sun. But I like to use it when I don’t have to stay under direct sunlight, mainly indoors. As I said you need SPF even when you are at home, so this will do. When in sun, I need an SPF of 50+. I also like using it on top of my makeup just like translucent powder and I must say it does a great job as a translucent powder as it sets my makeup and mattifies. It also gives a subtle shimmer somewhat like the HD powders and I love it. Plus I have the advantage of an SPF.
Lush suggests to re-apply the powdered sunscreen every 2 hours, just as any other sunscreens but I think it stays longer than that. One bottle contains 70g of the product. You don’t have to repurchase for a very long time because you need only a very small amount of the product.
One other advantage of this sunscreen is that you don’t have to wait for it to get absorbed into your skin. Just apply and go. I also like to use this a dry shampoo and I love the beautiful fragrance it leaves on my hair.
Not just that, why I like the powdered sunshine is because it actually soothed my skin irritation. I had a few bumps on my jawline due to an allergic reaction and this product really helped me in soothing it. But please don’t test any new product when you have an allergic reaction.
I think the main reason it helped is because it contains calamine, which we know is a soothing and antiseptic powder and is high in zinc oxide so works perfect as a sunscreen, along with olibanum oil which has toning and antiseptic effects. Also, I think patchouli might have helped as it has an anti-bacterial and cooling effect.
Unlike most Lush products, powdered sunshine has a bunch of scary looking ingredients. The two main ingredients apart from calamine, lime and lemon oils and corn flour are octyl methoxycinnamate and octocrylene. Don’t get scared by the name. Octocrylene is a compound which absorbs UVB and short-wave UVA, also acts as an emollient. Octyl methoxycinnamate which also absorbs UVB from the sun protecting the skin from damage and also helps to reduce the appearance of scars. (I googled :P)
For all those who hate to read a long post, Let’s just summarise
In love with:
- Non-greasy, no white cast.
- Easy to carry and travel-friendly.
- Doesn’t look powdery even on tanned skin.
- Stay long.
- A little goes a long way.
- Lovely fragrance.
- Works great as a loose powder.
- Mattifies the skin and gives a subtle shimmer.
- Contains some great ingredients which helps is soothing the skin too.
- Lush powdered sunshine can also be used as a dry shampoo. So it is basically a multi-purpose product.
Not in love with:
- SPF is really low, just 15.
- Powder is a bit grainy.
Overall, if you ask me if I would use it as a sunscreen when I am staying in the sun for a long time, I will not as the SPF is low. But when I stay indoors or when I don’t have to stay under direct sunlight I will use it. It helped to soothe and relax my skin so I would love to keep it. I can use it on top of my makeup as a loose powder and it mattifies and gives a beautiful glow to the skin.Which means this is not a product that must not be purchased, this is a great product but as a sunscreen it is just average. So I leave the choice to you!
